First Class or No Class?

If you are interested in traveling in style, it always helps to fly first class.  Of course, with first class seating, you can expect to pay a premium.  At the end of the day, however, it’s worth it.

You don’t have to be wealthy to travel like the wealthy, though.  There are many ways you can get bumped up to first class status without having to fork over the extra dough.  Just keep in mind that none of this is actually guaranteed to get you that first class seating, though, it couldn’t hurt to try.

The following tips were taken from and you can read the entire article (including the remaining tips) on their site.

  • If you travel on a very empty flight where weight and balance is an issue the airline may require that some passengers be upgraded (best to have a seat somewhere in the middle of an aircraft for this)
  • If a flight is oversold and you are an infrequent traveler on a cheap ticket, volunteer to give up your seat – more likely to get upgraded if not on your original flight, then the one you have been rebooked on.
  • If a flight is oversold and you are an infrequent traveler on a cheap ticket, volunteer to give up your seat – more likely to get upgraded if not on your original flight, then the one you have been rebooked on.
  • A smile goes a long way. If you are nice as possible to the check-in and gate agents then sometimes if a flight is oversold and you just happen to be one of the nicest passengers that a check-in agent meets that day, they may put a comment on your passenger record such as “nice passenger if you need to upgrade”.
  • Don’t ask for an upgrade, especially if you aren’t a frequent traveler on that particular airline. Airline agents tend to be agitated by this.

These are just a few examples of what you can do to possibly get that coveted first class upgrade without paying the egregious fare.

Detailing Your Car

Let’s face it, not everyone can afford a luxurious lifestyle.  That doesn’t mean that you can’t look good living how you live.  And that extends to your vehicle.

Very often, cars and trucks are left dirty, dusty, muddy, and everything in between.  Washing your vehicle every so often can certainly make it more appealing to look at, but there are two sides to your vehicle.  You have both an outside and an inside.

Of course, the outside is the part that everyone else sees.  You want to make sure that is clean and sparkling.  That is a given.  However, the inside is just as important to keep clean and tidy.  Now, most people won’t see the inside of your car, but you certainly will.  And at the end of the day, wouldn’t you feel much better knowing that you are driving in a clean, pristine atmosphere?

There are many options when it comes to getting your car cleaned.

carwashYou can stand outside with a hose in hand and a bucket of sudsy water in the other.  This, of course, is time consuming and quite often, a bit of a chore.

You could always go to your local gas station and pay somewhere between $6-12 for an automated car wash.  This is great if you need a quick cleaning (especially great in the coastal areas when you need to get the salt off of the under-carriage of your vehicle).  You car will definitely come out looking clean – from a distance.  Up close, though, you will almost always see something the car wash missed.  It’s just a fact of life.

A professional car wash could handle your car.  That way you know you’re getting the personal touch of an actual human being which is often softer and gentler than the high-powered jets of water and soap being thrown at your car.  This could cost you anywhere from $10-30 depending on where you go and what you have done.  Of course, they typically will only cover the outside of your car.

If you are looking for the best option to allow you to ride in style, comfort, and cleanliness, you mustn’t overlook the value of a top-quality professional vehicle detailing company.  With the right company, you will feel like you are driving a brand new car – both inside and out.  The car will look great on the outside, with every little detail paid attention to.  On the inside, you would be hard-pressed to find a loose hair, a speck of dust, or even a 30-week old french fry between the seats.  Car detailing is often a relatively inexpensive way to afford yourself a little bit of luxury in your life.  And if you can find a mobile detailing company, you are in an even better position because it won’t cost you any time.  They will come out to you, like San Antonio luxury detailing company Always Shine-N Mobile Detailing.

Top 10 Exotic Cars

Awhile back, I posted about the top 10 luxury cars under $40,000 (you can read that here).  That’s all well and good for those of us looking for a small slice of the luxury life.

top10exoticcars2015When it comes to a luxurious lifestyle, sometimes you need to go well above and beyond.  What I’m talking about is exotic cars.  An exotic car can cost you a small fortune; however, owning one can give instant credibility to your positions of wealth and power.  And at the end of the day, isn’t that what it’s all about?

There are a lot of factors in what determines the tops of the exotic car world.  There are too many factors for me to determine myself.  As such, I’ve found a good list of the top 10 exotic cars, and you can read that here.

Of course, this isn’t a definitive list by any means, but it’s certainly a good start.

Mega Yacht

If you are trying to live the life of luxury, you should probably own a yacht.  Nothing says you live a lavish life like owning a yacht.  And not just any yacht – we’re talking about a mega yacht.  It’s clearly more than just having a home on the water.  With a mega yacht, you can own life while on the sea.  The amount of money required to own and operate a mega yacht is insane; however, if you are living in luxury and want to enjoy life and all the finest things it can offer, this isn’t a bad way to go.

Check out the video below for an inside look at a 205-foot mega yacht: The Apogee.

Windowless Private Jet

That name is not only true about the jet, but it may also be crack at Microsoft (if you’re a tech geek like me).  The last thing you want on your plane is something known to crash a lot.

Now that I’ve gotten that out of my system…

The windowless private jet concept by IXION is a marvel of a design.  The fuselage itself is windowless, which, of course, allows for better aerodynamics.  But that doesn’t mean you can’t see the world outside.  The interior is essentially covered in displays.  You can show whatever you like on those displays, even the world outside as the plane has cameras all over it to allow for real-time rendering of the outside world directly to your displays.

If that’s not enough, it will also have passenger tracking and each passenger receives his or her own avatar to control his or her immediate area and he or she can see on the displays.  The avatar actually follows you around as you move from end to end of the plane.  This idea alone is mind-blowing.  It’s like having a tiny assistant following you around at your beck and call.

Beyond that, the interior just looks stunning.  It is the definition of luxury.  And not having to fly coach on a commercial jet would only be that much sweeter.

Take a look at the video below for more on the windowless private jet concept.

Luxury Destinations around the US

When it comes to luxury, often the place and surroundings have a lot to do with it.  If you are dining on a fine cuisine dressed to the nines but your in a dirt and roach-infested diner in the middle of the slums of a decrepit city, you really aren’t dealing in luxury.  If, however, you are being attended to hand and foot, have the utmost comfort, and the sights around you help create a relaxing atmosphere, you may be dealing in luxury.

Location can be everything in almost any facet of life.  As such, there are obviously some places that are more luxurious than others.  What better way to decide the most luxurious places in the United States than to read a list of luxury locations.  You can read that list here and please leave a comment below if you agree or disagree with some of that list.

Now That’s a Boat!

The AzzamMeasuring in at a whopping 590 feet, the new super-yacht, the Azzam, is now listed as the world’s largest yacht.  To even try to comprehend the astronomical cost to build this vessel would likely make your brain hurt just a little.  Seriously, if you had an extra $605 million, why wouldn’t you commission the building of the world’s largest boat?

You can read the full story here.

But if you just want the details, here you go.

  • The Azzam is 57 feet longer than the previous longest boat on record, the Eclipse.
  • The construction of the boat took approximately 3 years
  • No one knows the identity of the owner
  • The yearly upkeep is estimated to be approximately $60 million
  • The yacht is actually still under construction
  • There are suggestions that the yacht may be outfitted with more amenities than the Eclipse – the Eclipse’s amenities include: two helipads (because one isn’t enough), two swimming pools (outdoor and indoor?), a cinema (why not?), a disco (with a boat the size of a small town, you need somewhere to party), a mini-sub with capabilities to dive 150 feet below the ocean surface, bullet-proof glass and armor plating lining that master bedroom, and a missile defense system (I don’t even know what to say about that)

The biggest downside of a boat this size is that many destination ports aren’t equipped to house a boat of this size.  It would seem that the smart play here would be to have a mini-yacht housed inside of the Azzam.  This way, the Azzam can drop anchor off the coast, and everyone can still get to shore at there destination port.

That just leaves one question: Who will man the missile defense system?  The heavily-armored and armed guards, of course!  What was I thinking?

To be honest, I love boats.  I love yachts.  But I personally think even this is a little too much.

But, when you want to live in luxury, you may as well go all out!

Luxurious Beginnings

Hello and welcome to Escape the Map.  I am here to help you realize that luxury is more than objects and places.  I want to show you that it is a state of life.  Anyone can live a life of luxury.  All you need is the mindset to do so.

In the coming days, weeks, months, and maybe even years, I’m going to share with you my takes on luxury.  You’ll read and see what I find to be luxurious and why.  I hope you’ll take nothing less than a feeling that even you can live the life you desire if you just change your mindset to do so.

For now, I’m breaking everything down in to multiple categories to make it all easier for you.  We have the following categories (which very well could expand in the future):

  • IRL (In Real Life) – This category will be your normal typical luxury items easily attainable.  You’ll also find my thoughts, ideas, and experiences here.
  • Home – As you may have guessed, you will find luxury homes, decor, and more.  These homes and items will make your home much more comfortable and stylish.
  • Beyond – There’s luxury and then there is outlandish.  This will be for those items that I find to be way too far out there for any normal person to ever really experience.  This doesn’t mean you can not, it’s just a lot less likely.  Maybe even a ton less likely.

There you have it.  Check back often and we will get you on the road to luxury.
